Analyze products in the selected category (home cleaning) and their associated systems to identify key sustainability problems. Collectively brainstorm solutions to make these products and systems have less of an impact on the environment and increase their circularity. Undertake research, analysis and design of a specific product and its systems and prototype a conceptual solution for the selected product and its systems.
After initially looking at various segment of the product category (kitchen, bathroom, surfaces, laundry) independently, we realized that brand loyalty was weak in all categories: consumers typically picked what was most visible / available on their weekly shopping trips.
An opportunity. therefore existed to create an integrated system that was more convenient for the end user that also focused much more on being environmentally friendly and exploiting scale economies for efficiency.
The result can be seen in our video - a combination of advanced technologies with a heavy focus on thinking about the entire lifecycle of the product.
Intellectual skills
• Research and analyze a product and be able to identify if it addresses sustainability principles
• Apply system thinking to solve problems
• Select an appropriate method to design for sustainability
• Explore and develop a novel and sustainable solution to a design problem.
Practical skills • Prototype a system using models and videos.
Transferable skills • Communicate concepts and detail designs using both models, freehand sketches, CAD solid model and prototypes.
